Avoiding the Crowds & Chaos of Venice

I wasn’t sure I’d love Venice. The reviews were mixed—too crowded, too touristy—but it’s an iconic city I felt I had to see for myself.

My grandmother, Veta, was born April 22, 1927, dec My grandmother, Veta, was born April 22, 1927, decades before Earth Day’s proclamation and founding. I credit her with my wandering spirit because she was a woman brave enough to go, do and see. She passed in 2016, but her impact, much like these places, has never left me. ♡.Tell me: what’s a place that’s never left you?#earthday #nationalparks #publiclands
This week challenged me. Whether in war or peace This week challenged me. Whether in war or peace, being in the military means you get close to death in a way most people don’t. Loss happens over and over again. It never makes any sense, not the car accidents or the motorcycle crashes, not the battles lost to our own demons, not the phone calls that cleave a day in half, not any of it. It doesn’t get easier. It just stacks. This week, I:* grieved the loss of another friend* realized I use procrastination to avoid imperfection* bought new binoculars* saw The Drama and couldn’t figure out what the internet was so upset aboutCurrently, I’m:* feeling wrung out* reading Girl Dinner by Olivie Blake* trying to figure out what to watch after the wild ride of Search Party
Hi, hello – here’s a long-overdue van build update Hi, hello - here’s a long-overdue van build update! There’s a lot going on in my life this month and, as is so often the case in April, most of it heavy. Still, there’s a van to build. Lately, I’ve worked on: ✔️ building out the partition✔️ installing a fixed stove✔️ upholstering blopsNext up: shelves around the galley, overhead cabinets and the seating area.#vanbuild #vanlife #vanconversion #solotravel
This week was a heavy one, lightly dusted with a b This week was a heavy one, lightly dusted with a bit of wonder. One of the greatest injustices of being human is that our pets don’t live forever. Losing them is a very specific kind of grief, especially in our 30s and 40s, when they’ve been there through so many versions of us. They show up after breakups and divorces, in empty houses that slowly become homes, and in the moments we start learning how to take care of something other than ourselves. When we’re forced to say goodbye, it leaves an aching hollowness.A week ago today, we lost a very good (and also terrible) small-sized, fluffy-butted dog, and it broke the heart of someone I love. This week, I:* drove to and from NYC to hold a paw* felt moon joy watching the Artemis II crew return safely* saw Macbeth in RichmondI discovered:* a few new Virginia wines* new parts of BrooklynNext week, I will:* finish a book (current read: The Correspondent)* run more miles than I did this week* write the sad thing
