What I Did & Spent on a Solo Weekend in Asheville & the Great Smoky Mountains

I really, really needed this trip. I needed to get out of town, to put on my pack and walk into the woods. I needed to spend a few hours in the car, music up and windows down. I needed to be alone in the woods, to take myself to dinner, to drink new beers, […]

Most years, I mark Veterans Day with photos of me Most years, I mark Veterans Day with photos of me at various points in this multi-decade career. But the job was always capturing moments and telling stories. It’s a privilege, most days, to be there and watch as someone achieves something, experiences something, conquers something, and an even bigger honor to capture that moment and tell that story.Happy Veterans Day, friends. Here are ten moments captured (by me) over the last decade. 2025: Normandy for the 81st Commemoration of D-Day.2024: Ethan Allen Firing Range, near Jericho, Vermont, for the Army National Guard Best Warrior Competition.2023: Fort Pickett for Expert Infantry Badge testing. 2022: Sandston, Virginia. Task Force Red Dragon Welcome Home.2021: Fort Pickett 11B Infantry Transition Course.2020: Marines repair a AV-8B Harrier jet at our Army Aviation Support Facility in Sandston, Virginia. 2019: Fort Pickett for Air Assault Zero Day. 2018: Icebound Tangier Island during a supply run.2017: Fort Pickett final Testing for the Expert Infantryman Badge. Never have I ever not been emotionally invested in this thing.2016: Tajikistan with SFC Scott Wiseman on a horse because why the fuck not.#veterans #veteransday🇺🇸 #military #army #publicaffairs

What was scariest was cutting the coolant lines in the van so I could install a hot water heater. But! I lived to tell the story & here it is, and it’s a few curse words, many confused grimaces & much street debris. The van has plumbing, hot water, and almost a full ceiling, the installation of which was easy until it wasn’t and then required numerous emotional support cookies to manage. Additionally: celebrated good friends, horrified my dog with a bandana, leaned in to Spooky Season, had fun wine times, met many tiny frogs on a small local adventure & declared (repeatedly) that Scream is my favorite movie.#vanbuild #photodump #francine
