What I Did & Spent on a Solo Weekend in Asheville & the Great Smoky Mountains

I really, really needed this trip. I needed to get out of town, to put on my pack and walk into the woods. I needed to spend a few hours in the car, music up and windows down. I needed to be alone in the woods, to take myself to dinner, to drink new beers, […]

Tomorrow is for real. 2️⃣ New this year, the Expedition Class lets a handful of rich guys pay to experience the Iditarod. They’ll have their own support teams and veterinarians, can receive outside help (a huge no-no for the actual race teams), and have donated many, many dollars for the privilege — to the race and to communities along the trail. This year, former Iditarod champion Thomas Waerner will lead the pack.3️⃣ Many people think the Iditarod exists to commemorate the 1925 serum run, but it was actually founded in 1974 to preserve the tradition of dog mushing.4️⃣ The Iditarod doesn’t separate competitors by sex or gender and all mushers compete together. What matters most is the ability to care for dogs across more than 1,000 miles of Alaskan wilderness. 5️⃣ This year’s race includes 37 dog sled teams, including four former champions, 14 rookies & many very good dogs.🎥 @blacksprucedogsledding, 2021
The thing about Claude is that he’s very good. He The thing about Claude is that he’s very good. He also loves to run, and we’ve been making that a priority lately by visiting a few bigger @sniffspots around Richmond, including one that’s 650 of open farmland. Van build things are currently cardboard-centric as I template everything before making final cuts. It’s the right way to do things, but also, I’m really tired of cutting cardboard, hoarding cardboard, picking up slivers of cardboard and looking at cardboard. Also: ate an incredible meal at @thebrooklynrva, appreciated the @vmfamuseum & the Giants exhibit, and even though it’s been weeks since the Venerable Monks made their way through Richmond, I’m still thinking about their time here.
It was a brilliant and beautiful thing to see Rich It was a brilliant and beautiful thing to see Richmond show up to see the Venerable Monks as they marked the 100th day of their Walk for Peace. I followed them as they headed from City Hall to their night stop at VUU, which is less than a mile from my house. The streets were lined the whole way. People stacked themselves on mounds of ice, skated along icy sidewalks and watched from apartment balconies.I saw people pop out of shops to snap a few selfies as the monks walked by, saw people kneeling on the icy roadway with tears in their eyes and hands clasped at heart center, heads bowed in respect. What struck me most was the breadth of the citizenry I walked with and stood beside. We didn’t fit a certain demographic. We were old and young, Black and white, dressed in business suits, leggings and streetwear. I’ve never seen us so united by one thing, not like this. Never like this. What a radiant gift it is to see us come together to recognize peace and to celebrate kindness. *Today is going to be my peaceful day.*🕊️@walkforpeace.usa @rvagov #walkforpeace #peacewalk #buddism #rva
